Generally, when a human becomes infected with a virus, symptoms, and severity can be dependent on the stress of individual health conditions as well as the viruses they have been infected with. Currently, the CDC is working to understand the infectiousness, severity and other features that may be associated with this new 2019-nCoV strain.

Current situation

The new coronavirus was first identified in Wuhan, China’s Hubei Province, on Dec. 30, 2019. As of January 27, 2020, more than 2,700 cases have been reported and there have been more than 80 virus-related deaths – and these numbers continue to grow daily. Currently, 5 cases have been reported in the United States, all associated with recent travel to Hubei Province. There is currently no vaccine to prevent 2019-nCoV infection.

 

Recommendations

Despite the 2019-nCoV effect in China, the CDC says the immediate health risk to the general public in cohesive states is low. However, as it is a respiratory disease, and in North America, we are in the midst of cold and influenza seasons, it is always good to share and follow these common-sense yet highly effective general hygiene practices, as outlined by the CDC:

 

.Wash your hands often with soap and water or with alcohol-based hand sanitizer

. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with down-to-the-hands

. Avoid close contact with sick people

. Stay home when you’re sick

.Cover your cough or sneeze

.Clean and disinfect an EPA registered disinfectant with often touched objects and surfaces such as bleach wipes or sprays

 

In view of the initial phase of the outbreak, the CDC has issued a level 3 travel warning recommending avoiding all non-essential travel to China. If you have employees who have recently traveled to China and may get in touch with the 2019-nCoV, encourage them to contact your healthcare provider immediately.
